The Golf Handicap Index under the World Handicap System (WHS) is a measure of a player's potential ability. It allows golfers of different skill levels to compete fairly by adjusting scores based on course difficulty.
The calculator uses the WHS 2022 formula:
Where:
Explanation: The system uses your best 8 score differentials from your most recent 20 rounds. Fewer than 20 rounds require fewer scores to be used according to WHS rules.
Details: The Handicap Index provides a standardized measure of a golfer's ability, enabling fair competition across different courses and skill levels. It's essential for tournament play and tracking improvement.
Tips: Enter your score differentials (one per line). You need at least 3 scores to calculate a handicap. The calculator will automatically select the appropriate number of best scores based on WHS rules.
Q1: What is a Score Differential?
A: Score Differential is calculated from your gross score adjusted for course rating and slope rating: (113 / Slope Rating) × (Adjusted Gross Score - Course Rating)
Q2: How many scores do I need for an official handicap?
A: You need at least 54 holes (three 18-hole rounds or equivalent) to establish your first Handicap Index.
Q3: Why is there a 0.96 multiplier?
A: The "Bonus for Excellence" factor (0.96) slightly reduces the handicap index, encouraging improvement and making it harder to maintain very low handicaps.
Q4: How often should I update my scores?
A: You should post all acceptable scores as soon as possible after completing a round, ideally on the same day.
Q5: What's the maximum handicap index?
A: The maximum Handicap Index is 54.0 for both men and women under the WHS.
